Frequently
Asked Questions
Is it true that oysters should only be eaten in months that end in
“r”?
Nope,
that’s just a myth. While it’s true that oysters tend to be larger and more
flavorful during the cooler seasons, it’s perfectly safe to eat them year
round.
Are oysters aphrodisiacs?
Again,
sadly, there’s no scientific evidence that oysters can rev up the libido. But
then again, what’s more romantic than a candlelit dinner with oysters, lobster
and champagne?
Do you sell sushi- and sashimi-grade fish?
Yes.
We sell sushi- and sashimi-grade yellowfin (Ahi) tuna, salmon, scallops and
fluke just to name a few. Ask our retail seafood specialists for assistance in
picking the right grade of fish for your needs.
Do you sell live crawfish and Crabs?
Yes.
We usually start getting prime crawfish from Louisiana in early February. And we bring in blue crabs every
Saturday after Memorial Day. If
you need crabs any other day please let us know we will be happy to oblige.
Subscribe to our weekly e-newsletter to receive announcements about seasonal
shipments.
How can I tell if seafood is fresh?
Sight
and smell are the best indicators. If seafood has a strong fishy smell, it’s
probably past its prime. Likewise, if it’s got a grey color, it’s likely not
fresh.
What are omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3
fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids, which means that they are
essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body and must be
obtained from food. They are found in fish and certain plant oils. A balance of
omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid) in the diet help promote
health, playing a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and
development.
Should I be concerned about the possibility of high mercury levels
in some fish?
While
it’s true that some species of fish can contain an organic form of mercury
called methylmercury, it’s generally not enough to be a hazard to most
consumers. For safety’s sake, in 2004 the FDA and EPA did advise pregnant and
nursing women, women who might become pregnant, and young children to eat no
more than 12 ounces a week (the equivalent of 2 average meals) of shrimp,
salmon, pollock, catfish and canned light tuna, and to avoid shark, swordfish,
tilefish and king mackerel entirely.
Will
you cook and clean shrimp?
Definitely yes,
we will cook and clean any size shrimp for no extra charge…just call in
advance. We also steam and split
lobsters no extra charge.+
How should I store fresh seafood? How long will it last?
Store
your seafood purchase immediately when you reach home by either placing it in
your refrigerator or burying it in ice. When purchasing fresh-frozen seafood,
place it in the freezer immediately. In general, use fish within 1-2 days from
purchase. If buying live shellfish, such as oysters and mussels in the shell,
place them in a shallow dish covered with damp towels or moistened paper
towels. Never put live shellfish in water or in an airtight container. Mussels
live in the shell should be used within 2-3 days; clams and oysters within a
week or so. Store shrimp, squid and shucked shell- fish in a leak-proof bag or
container. Squid and freshly shucked clams have a shelf life of 1-2 days.
Shrimp and scallops have a shelf life of about 2-3 days. And freshly shucked
oysters have a shelf life of 5-7 days. Live lobsters and crabs should be cooked
the day they are purchased. Store cooked whole lobsters or crabs in a rigid
airtight container and use them within 2-3 days. If you have questions, talk to
one of our knowledgeable retail seafood specialists.
What seafood is best on the grill?
Flaky,
delicate white fish really isn’t suited for direct grilling, as it tends to
fall apart on the grill. (although you can use a fish basket to keep it
intact). More durable grill candidates include shrimp, salmon, halibut, sea
bass, black drum, snapper, tuna, mahi mahi, amberjack and swordfish.
Will you fillet whole fish for me?
We
sure will, at no extra charge. Just ask one of our retail seafood specialists.
Do you take special orders?
Absolutely.
If you don’t see what you want, just ask one of our retail seafood specialists.
Since our counter display space is limited, it’s very possible that we’ll have
what you’re looking for in back. If not, we’ll be happy to order it. You can
also call us to place a special order.
Do you ship seafood?
Yes,
But it the cost of shipping can often be far more expensive than the product
itself. That being said we would
be delighted to do so.

well. Please ask for a
catering menu or download it from our website www.metroseafood.com .
