Happy World Oceans Day...No, not kidding

Good morning to all of our beloved friends and clients and may I be the first to wish you a Happy World Oceans Day...No, not kidding

The theme for World Oceans Day 2017 is Our Oceans, Our Future, and the conservation action focus is on encouraging

solutions to plastic pollution and preventing marine litter for a healthier ocean and a better future. For World Oceans Day 2017, hundreds of events are planned around the world, including a major UN Ocean Conference being held in New York City during the week of World Oceans Day.

As a Half-Lebanese Fishmonger and one who makes his living from the Oceans of the World, I fully support this Glorious day and hope that collectively, we can all do our parts to keep ¾ of this crazy Blue Marble healthy.

It's hard to believe that in this day and age where recycling is deeply embedded in our everyday lives that there still a major problem with plastic pollution. Not to be a buzz kill but in the ocean, plastic debris injures and kills fish, seabirds and marine mammals. Marine plastic pollution has impacted at least 267 species worldwide, including 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species. I feel as though I would be remiss if I did not bring these grim statistics to the forefront as to stress the seriousness of this issue. When I was talking to one of my clients, who happens to be a Marine Biologist, he suggested that even the smallest steps we take can make a huge difference; from regular recycling to weaning ourselves off so many plastic bags or even just simply picking up a plastic rubbish we encounter as we take a walk...it all makes a difference. For me, I feel as though if I send a "Message" to those serial polluters, we can make an even bigger ripple in the pond. For example, If you see someone you know littering with reckless abandonment but feel uncomfortable saying something just stop by Metro and ask for the "Sea Soldier" (that's me) and write the person's name down on a card along with their address and your personal preference of punishment, like for example a Limp or a Lisp. Sure, it sounds extreme but I feel it's a small price to pay for a healthier planet.

Speaking of healthy, today's recipes are the perfect marriage of wholesome and delicious featuring Orecchiette with Salmon Baby Arugula and Capers & Grilled Scallops and Vegetable Salad with an Herbed Saffron Aioli. I sincerely hope you enjoy them and thank you for spending this time with me.
